With the film fans of America being very much in the midst of a superhero craze, and a movie like The Avengers being the top grossing movie of 2012 so far, it’s really no surprise for Big Idea Entertainment to return with a new superhero-themed story that unites their beloved Larry Boy hero with a host of new characters. In fact, it’s a ‘big idea’ that really makes you wonder, Why have they not thought of this before?!

The League of Incredible Vegetables clearly borrows elements from various superhero franchises and names to become one massive superhero spoof. Following in the footsteps of The Avengers, but borrowing its name from a merger of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and Pixar’s The Incredibles, this league of super veggies finds Larry Boy (who in and of himself is a spoof of Batman and Spider-Man) in need of assistance when a mad scientist decides to use fear to cripple Bumblyburg. This causes characters like Bob, Mr. Lunt and Petunia to suit up as superheroes for the very first time. And with it, a wealth of familiar superhero gags are made, along with plenty of fun character moments to be had when everyone unites to defeat the evil Dr. Flurry (not to be confused Mr. Freeze, of course). But when the league find that even they aren’t enough to defeat Flurry’s fear-dar weapon, Junior Asparagus must suit up to become the latest addition to The League of Incredible Vegetables!

Directed by co-creator (and voice of Larry The Cucumber) Mike Nawrocki, The League of Incredible Vegetables is pure VeggieTales spoofing at its finest. If you’ve been itching for a new Larry Boy adventure, this isn’t entirely Larry Boy-centric, but teaming him with the likes of Thingamabob (Bob), Vogue (Petunia), and S-cape (Mr. Lunt), brings a whole new level of excitement and humor to the Larry Boy dynamic. Larry’s faithful butler Alfred (real subtle there on the reference, guys) also gets ample screen time this time around, fulfilling the role of characters like Q from 007, Edna Mole from The Incredibles and Nick Furry from Avengers to be the tech wiz and inspiration behind The League. When Junior steps in and explores what his new identity can be — which ultimately becomes “Ricochet” — the league is officially complete. But the episode plays out so naturally as a superhero tale that it almost seems unexpected when the lesson on trusting God over fear is introduced. Still, it works well, and when Junior puts aside his fear to trust God for victory in what is ultimately a modernized version of the David and Goliath story, the theme of tackling fear is driven home successfully.

It’s also neat to note that not one of the superheroes have a true super power. Much like how Batman just has his strength, detective skills and gadgets, and Tony Stark just has his Iron Man suit and loads of money to fund his research and technology, The League of Incredible Vegetables each merely don super suits. Vogue’s suit can change shape; S-Cape has a super cape that can do things; Ricochet can bounce around like a super ball; and Bob has robotic arms and such, much like Inspector Gadget. And of course, there’s Larry Boy with his “super suction ears.” It’s neat because these veggies need to rely on God for their victory, with only the aid of super suits and each other (both of which they cannot rely on).

The silly song of this episode is even given a superhero theme. One of the gourds comes to The League and wishes to join them as a “supper” hero, and proceeds to eat all of their food. It’s zany, it’s silly, and it’s the perfect addition to the silly song catalog. As far as music goes, Newsboys return (for the first time since Michael Tait replaced Peter Furler as vocalist) to provide a pop theme for The League of Incredible Vegetables, and it works quite nicely for the vibe of this particular show. They even use the song instrumentally during a scene to tie it all together.

Finally, the episode is given one of the most humorous and satisfying outros that I have seen in recent years. Not only does it satisfy the need for finally bringing Bob the Tomato into the superhero realm, but Big Idea references the tomato’s longtime struggle with the “What We Have Learned” theme song with a fantastic and unexpected reaction from Bob. It’s truly priceless. I won’t spoil any more details here, but I must add that the very sight of Bob starting to freak out Larry for being too over-the-top is fantastic and rewarding.

All in all, the superhero fans in your family will probably adore this latest entry into the VeggieTales collection. Finally, parents won’t have to worry about rough content for their kids who just want a cool superhero to love or look up to. With The League of Incredible Vegetables, just about everyone’s favorite veggies join in to the superhero fun (and take well-placed jabs at familiar superhero trademarks from Christopher Nolan’s Batman’s unusually growly voice to Thor’s hammer) and even the girls will have a character in Vogue to cling to. After all these years, the VeggieTales team is still producing great entertainment and The League of Incredible Vegetables is easily one of their best yet.

As we come up on this season of giving (and getting), I’m reminded of one of my favorite VeggieTales shows, Madame Blueberry. This early VeggieTales show, (incidentally, the very first show that Mike Nawrocki, VeggieTales’ co-creator, wrote in totality), tells the story of a very blue berry who thinks the reason for her melancholy is because she just doesn’t have enough “stuff”.

Madame thinks all her troubles will be over when she is introduced to a fantastical place called “Stuff Mart”. This mega warehouse of stuff has aisles and aisles of all the things that Madame Blue thinks she needs to complete her life.

As she loads up her basket full of shiny items and is about to leave the store, she stops to look upon a scene of a father and son standing near a train set. The boy is looking longingly at the train as it rides around the tracks, wishing he could have it for his very own. His dad gently reminds him that they can’t afford it, but that’s okay because they have so much to be grateful for – a place to live, food to eat, and especially God’s love.

As I think about the simple message of this story, it brings to mind a trip I took to South Africa a few years ago. A group of us went there to work with a small church located in a very poor township called Masiphumelele. The town was no bigger than a couple of football fields – and the homes were pasted together from old pieces of tin, discarded wood and whatever they could find to give them some semblance of shelter. One after another, many of them leaning precariously, crammed next to each other (some sharing a wall) throughout the dirt paths of the township.

One night, after several of us had been working at the church, one of the women wanted to express her thanks for our group’s help and encouragement and invited us to her home to talk and unwind. When we arrived to her “house”, she parted a curtain that functioned as a makeshift door. She smiled welcomingly as she led us in, across the dirt floor into her home. No bigger than a child’s small bedroom, she gave us the “tour” of her house. She beamed brightly as she proclaimed, “I’m so grateful to have you here today in this home that God has so graciously provided me. I am truly blessed.”

Even though this woman barely had enough to eat and hardly a roof over her head, she had the peace and contentment that comes from true gratefulness and the recognition that God had provided for ALL her needs – she seemingly lacked nothing in the knowledge of His love and care for her!

At this time of year, it’s easy to get caught up in giving – and getting. Madame Blueberry was still blue, even after she attained more “stuff” and longed for the simple joy she saw in the interaction between the father and son who couldn’t afford even a 10th of what she could. As she witnessed the little boy sing this song, as he reflected on what he was thankful for, she realized how much she too had to be grateful for.

I thank God for this day,

For the sun in the sky,

For my mom and my dad,
For my piece of apple pie!

For our home on the ground,
For His love that’s all around,
That’s why I say thanks every day!

Because a thankful heart is a happy heart!
I’m glad for what I have,
Thats an easy way to start!

For the love that He shares,
‘Cause He listens to my prayers,
That’s why I say thanks every day!

As we approach Christmas, we wish you the peace and joy that comes from knowing and recognizing God’s provision in each of your lives! A thankful heart truly is a happy heart.

Each day at VeggieTales, we are thrilled to receive hundreds of letters from children who write to our characters to ask for advice, give suggestions for songs or just to share their own stories. One such story caught our eye early this year as we were preparing to put together our newest show “The League of Incredible Vegetables.” Kristina, a vivacious 8-year old, wrote to us about a diagnosis she had recently received of Clear Cell Sarcoma, a rare and deadly cancer.

As Kristina and her family began the brave and faithful journey towards fighting for Kristina’s life, Kristina stated that one of her fondest wishes was to be the voice of a character in a VeggieTales show. She also hoped to meet the people behind the scenes who put her favorite shows together.

We were blessed and thankful to be able to make Kristina’s wish come true. Kristina’s big day in our studios started with a tour, then spending some time “behind the scenes” with our team to see how our shows are made, and finally in the recording studio where she voiced the character of a “pea” girl that appears in the “League of Incredible Vegetables!”

At the end of the whirlwind day, the attitude, spirit and optimism that Kristina and her family demonstrated during their time with us made us so grateful that we have the opportunity, in sometimes big and small ways, to impact the kids that love our stories and characters.

Kristina’s Dad summed it up best: “We choose each day to believe that God will heal Kristina. Today you and your staff made this battle so much easier to fight. You have allowed God to shine His bright and joyous glory through your hearts to ours.”

As of this writing, Kristina is doing well and her prognosis is good. Her family attributes her progress to the many, many people who have been praying for her since she first got the diagnosis…and that’s a lot to be grateful for! We are blessed to hear from many of you and your children about the ways our shows and stories have made you laugh, think and be inspired. We are humbled to be able to do what we do…and thankful that we are used to make big and small differences in people’s lives daily with our talking and singing vegetables who remind us that we are all special in His eyes!
